How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac without overwriting your photo

Quick answer: Open the HEIC photo in Preview, choose File → Export, select JPEG, and save a separately named copy. Check the new image before sending it. Changing the filename ending alone does not convert a photo.
This guide covers Preview on a Mac. It is a documented workflow with suggested checks, rather than a measured comparison of image quality on different devices.
First, check what the receiving website needs
Imagine a registration form that accepts JPG files, but your photo ends in .heic. Write down the accepted format, maximum file size and any required image dimensions before exporting. These are three different requirements: producing a JPEG does not by itself prove that the file is small enough or has the correct dimensions.
Create a folder called photo-delivery for the output. Keep the original outside that folder. This small separation makes it easier to see which file you plan to upload, especially when the two thumbnails look identical.
Export a separate JPEG in Preview
- Open the HEIC image in Preview.
- Choose File → Export.
- Choose JPEG from the Format menu. Apple documents an Option-key shortcut for revealing additional formats if a needed option is not shown.
- Use the JPEG quality control to choose an initial export setting.
- Give the copy a distinct name, such as
profile-photo-delivery.jpg, choose the delivery folder, and save.
Apple’s Preview conversion instructions describe the format menu, quality adjustment and separately named export. Menu appearance can vary with macOS version.
Use this acceptance checklist
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Correct photo | The exported copy contains the intended image, with no accidental crop. |
| Visible detail | Faces, small lettering or other important detail remain clear at the intended display size. |
| Upload size | The new copy fits the receiving form’s stated limit. |
| Orientation | The image appears the right way up in the receiving preview. |
| Delivery confirmation | The form confirms that the attachment was accepted. |
If the JPEG is too large
Return to the HEIC original and export another candidate with a different quality setting. Label the candidates clearly, then compare the same important detail. Do not keep exporting from the previous JPEG merely because it is nearby in the folder.
For example, keep photo-candidate-a.jpg and photo-candidate-b.jpg while deciding. Once one passes the size and visual checks, move only that candidate into the final delivery folder. This is a suggested review method, not a claim that any particular quality percentage guarantees a file size.
Do you need to convert every HEIC?
Start with the actual recipient. If the intended application already opens your original correctly and no different format is requested, conversion may add an unnecessary delivery version to manage. If compatibility is the obstacle, make the required copy while retaining the source.
Can I rename .heic to .jpg? That changes a label rather than performing the export described above. Read why renaming an extension is not conversion.
Should I use an online converter first? For this Mac workflow, Preview provides a local route. If you consider uploading a private photo elsewhere, use our online converter checklist before sharing it.
